Lithuania's Brain Drain
18th February 2015
This BBC news article looks at the de-population of Euro Area country Lithuania. According to the piece, "In the 25 years since the fall of Communism, Lithuania has lost one in five of its population." One in every 14 students of tertiary age studies overseas and this had led to a decline in student enrolment and difficulties in filling courses at universities. The loss of younger, more geographically mobile students and workers is a constraint on short term economic growth and also threatens long term competitiveness as Lithuania tries to build and sustain advantage in knowledge industries.
