Huge Job Shedding

Since the recession began the economy has shed more than 400,000 jobs - in this excellent short BBC news video, Stephanie Flanders looks at the impact of the rising scale of unemployment including the pressure on government finances.

Unemployment is an indicator that tends to lag the economic cycle so even if the recovery begins this summer and autumn, the jobless figures are set to worsen for some time to come.
