Horizontal Integration - Mega Merger in UK Telecoms
14th June 2023
News of a proposed mega-merger in the telecoms sector, with Vodafone and Three looking to merge, and in doing so, create the UK's largest mobile phone firm. The combined firm would have 27 million customers, compared to the 24 million of VirginO2 and the 20 million of EE. Presently, the two companies are the third- and fourth largest companies in the market.
Whether or not the merger get Competition and Markets Authority backing will depend upon weighing up the implications for consumer choice and the price of mobile services against the capacity for the newly merged company to provide a better quality service as the result of higher levels of investment.
