Harnessing the Cornell method of note making

Jim Riley

1st September 2011

The foundation for successful study requires an understanding of the process of how we learn and the role of note making- notice I did not say note taking.

This topic may sound pretty dry but if mastered a few simple tips and techniques can add a grade to the final exam result

I attach a PowerPoint 00_Active_Learning_and_note_making.pptx I use with my classes early on in the academic year to help explain how we learn new ideas and the role of note making in that process. Self explanatory I hope but the key points are:

to learn we must listen, I mean really really really listen

creating academic memories is about creating pathways between brain cells

active note making helps students focus on topics in hand

using the Cornell method of note making makes learning active

continually rereading classmates help strengthen the synaptic pathways between brain cells that constitute memory
