Externalities and Development: Mexico's Yucatán Railway Project

The BBC reports here on one of Mexico's biggest-ever infrastructure projects - the Yucatan railway mega-project which is designed to lift growth and development but is already three times over initial budget and which horrifies environmentalists.

The Yucatan railway mega-project, also known as the Tren Maya, is a proposed railway that would run through the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. The idea is that it would connect several tourist destinations, such as Cancun, Tulum, and Chichen Itza, and provide a more efficient and sustainable way for tourists to travel through the region. However, the project has been highly controversial, with many environmentalists and local communities opposing it due to concerns about its impact on the environment and the displacement of indigenous communities. Critics argue that the project is a vanity project for Mexico's president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, and that it will not benefit the local people or the environment in the long run
