Excellent graphic on changes in world inequality
5th May 2011
This graphic shows that in the past 25 years, most OECD countries have experienced an increase in inequality, as measured by the Gini coefficient. That may not be a shock to many but what is surprising is that some of the more egalitarian Scandinavian countries have had the biggest increases in inequality.
The Economist article argues that there must be broader, global forces pushing up inequality across countries. Among those mentioned are the removal of employment protection laws and anti-competitive market regulations.
So on balance, are these measures beneficial to the overall economy? Sounds like a good way to emphasis the importance of evaluation to me!
