Encouraging students to improve their word power

Jim Riley

3rd October 2010

Some students really struggle to find the words to describe data movements and changes in varialbes. For this reason I have started a ‘word list’ of economic descriptors to use in date response questions. Here is my work-in-progress list

Contractionary
Countercyclical
Dampening
Deflationary
Deteriorating
Expansionary
Hardening
Improving
Loosening
Mixed
Neutral
Probable
Procyclical
Reflationary
Sentiment
Softening
Tightening
Transparency
Volatile

One way forward is to ask them to maintain the glossary in say a spreadsheet, where terms can be sorted, and to add their own definition

Here are my top three online dictionairies

Wiktionary

Cambridge Advanced Learner’s Dictionary

Investors word.com

I am sure there are more terms and more online dictionaires that can be added to the above listing. If you have suggestions then please email me and I’ll collate and post again
