Emmanuel College Presentation - 22 October 2009

Geoff Riley

22nd October 2009

I was delighted to visit Emmanuel College in Gateshead today to participate in a session with a large number of enthusiastic and talented young economists…

My presentation to the students is streamed from the link below. I covered some of the causes of the recession and the policy responses to it before looking at some of the issues facing the north east economy as we head towards 2010. My own view is that next year could well be a tougher year for the UK economy than many are expecting. The economy remains exposed to great uncertainties both at home and in coping with external headwinds. The huge burden of personal and corporate sector debt will weigh heavily on the economy in the New Year. I was tremendously impressed with the students and a special word goes to nearly a hundred Year 9 students many of whom were getting an introduction to economics, but whose perceptive answers to questions were of a very high quality. It was a great visit and thanks to the economics and business team at Emmanuel for their warm welcome and hospitality.
