Economics at the Movies - Manufactured Landscapes

Geoff Riley

19th October 2010

This is a stunning and unforgettable film released in 2006. Documentary maker Ed Burtynsky focuses on areas transformed by human activity. The first scene reveals a Chinese factory with 23,000 employees, whom make most of the world’s irons. The scale of the enterprise is breath-taking – I have used this film when teaching division of labour, economies of scale, aspects of trade and globalisation, the rise of Chinese manufacturing, business ethics and I am sure you can think of many other parts of the course where sections can be used as vivid illustrations.
