Economics at the Movies: Local Hero - Valuing our heritage

Geoff Riley

30th August 2011

When Mark Knopfler’s iconic theme tune for Local hero rings out my mind takes me back to matches at St James’s Park and also to this fantastic film from the early 1980s.

In the film Knox Oil and Gas wants to buy a Scottish beach in order to drill for oil. But they find the locals a tough group to persuade not least an old man (played by Fulton Mackay) who lives on the beach and who values his heritage more than the dollars on offer. This link takes you to the final scene where the Knox Chairman (Bert Lancaster) is taken to meet Mackay to discuss the sale of the beach ... and an alternative use for the land is found (in a scene featuring a very young Peter Capadi from The Thick of It). Enjoy.
