Economic inactivity - Mothers quit work because of childcare

7th November 2023
The Fawcett Society has reported that the costs of childcare are a major deterrent to women returning to the workforce, with their data suggesting that around a quarter of a million women have left the workforce because they are unable to balance work and childcare. Two times more mothers than fathers have considered leaving their jobs because of childcare costs.
As a result, this reduces the number of people in the labour force, and the position of the long-run aggregate supply curve.
Over half (57%) of nursery staff are considering leaving the sector.

Only 17% of nurseries say they could offer the extra entitlement of free childcare announced by the Government.
