Geoff Riley

26th March 2010

An end to the spring term looks tantalisingly close and with it some time to enjoy the fresh air and escape the classroom! I hope you don’t mind me emailing with news of some updated resources and upcoming events and competitions? This resource newsletter is kindly sponsored by Edexcel, who have provided a message for you further below.

Authors at Tutor2u: Economics Conference (17 June 2010)
————————————————————————————————————————————
I am excited by the confirmed line up that we have for our 2010 Economics Conference at the superb British Library conference centre. Our four speakers are confirmed as Stephen King (Chief Global Economist at HSBC), Hamish McRae from the Independent, Professor Paul Collier (Oxford University) and Dr Linda Yueh (Oxford University) - all of whom have new books whose arrival on the bookshelves is imminent. We are organising book signings for each author so delegates will be able to take away with them some terrific new reading for the summer. And we are planning an informal lunchtime session for colleagues wanting to bring themselves up to speed with some ideas for great value items of software that can be used in teaching economics in the classroom. Booking details including some great value departmental deals are available here:

LSE Lecture Programme
————————————————————
For colleagues within striking distance of London, the LSE public lecture programme is outstanding and I have made several visits this year with my Year 12 and Year 13 students. The new LSE public lecture programme is published today – there are some attractive lectures and full details can be found here

UK Economy Green Shoots Presentation
————————————————————————————————
I maintain a rolling presentation on the UK economy – picking up on the key macroeconomic and policy developments - which I hope will be useful for students as they plan their Easter revision. The latest edition can now be downloaded from the Economics blog here:

HatTips for Resource Suggestions!
————————————————————————————
It is always nice to award a hattip through the Economics blogs to colleagues who suggest interesting and useful resources on the web – please email with your ideas and we will add them to the economics or business blogs as soon as we can!

Google Waving!
——————————————-
Google Wave has its critics but we have found it a useful software application for colleagues wanting to collaborate on tricky topics – Google wave can be found here
https://wave.google.com/wave/
and if you would like to join the existing economics waves, my wave email is tutor2uecon@googlewave.com

Cheers

Geoff

SPONSORS MESSAGE - FROM EDEXCEL
——————————————————————————————————-
GCE Economics examiners required for this summer

Edexcel is currently recruiting GCE Economics examiners to mark examinations this summer. We employ a large number of GCE Economics examiners every summer to participate in the marking of candidates’ scripts. The number of entries is continuing to grow year on year and because of this we need to expand our assessment teams.

To help the assessment teams grow we are keen to recruit Economics experts who are teachers, lecturers or occupational professionals. Examiners undertake a vital role in education, shaping the future of thousands of students.

As an Economics expert, you already possess high levels of commitment and dedication. We will complement that with comprehensive training and support you throughout the assessment process, whether this involves scripts marked traditionally or online.

We are particularly interested in hearing from experts who have experience in The Global Economy and Managing the Economy.

Being an examiner can inspire fresh ideas and new approaches to practising your subject and will give you valuable insight into national standards.

The marking period is between May – July and an allocation of scripts/items would normally take between 40 – 45 hours to mark.
To take advantage of this opportunity, please visit www.edexcel.com/aa-recruitment, select ‘vacancies’ and then click on ‘GCE’, to complete an online application form and view role descriptions and fees.

Please email tara.tierney@edexcel.com with any queries
