Disappointing ticket sales for the World Cup – complements

Sales of tickets for the World Cup in South Africa have been disappointing due to the opportunistic pricing of travel companies. Prices for airfares are at their peak as companies try to cash in on the occasion. As match tickets and air travel are close complements, the high prices have heavily affected demand for the games. This is a great example of how a high price of a complementary good affects demand for a product. Pupils could be asked to explain this situation using a supply and demand diagram.
