Deindustrialisation in the UK - UK car industry under threat
31st March 2023
An established player in the UK car industry has suggested that the UK is on the point of entering the last chance saloon as far as its car industry is concerned.
Given US and EU moves to subsidise green technology, he's concerned that the UK government hasn't done enough to help the sector and, without state support, he believes that many of them could leave and move elsewhere. Without decisive moves to encourage firms to produce electric vehicles, he's of the view that all that remains is the prospect of a managed decline.
- 775,000 cars were produced in the UK in 2022 down from 1.7 million in 2016
- This is the lowest annual output since 1956
- Shortages of key components including semi-conductors
- 1/3rd of new cars produced were electric vehicles
