Container Economics - Maersk’s Big Bet

Geoff Riley

19th August 2013

This is a simply fabulous video to show to economics students of whatever vintage - there is so much relevant stuff in here it would struggle to fit into one of the containers that fill the world's largest ever freight ships. Challenge your students to find as much economics in this as possible and then make some connections between the topics!

Maersk has committed to spending upwards of $3.7bn on new super sized vessels. It started the investment in 2011 when the global shipping industry was already hit by the lagged impact of the global financial crisis. The world's biggest container ship is currently making its maiden voyage from Asia to Europe. But the shipping industry is in the doldrums and can ill afford extra capacity to depress rates. Jeremy Grant from the Financial Times asks whether Maersk's bet on the new ships will be worth the gamble.
