This World Bank video clip looks at the rise of online gig work - the opportunities and the challenges that the growth of the sector poses. The World Bank are of the view that online gig work is particularly appealing to young people and women, but with that come a number of challenges, not least the threat that these workers can be exploited - not least in terms of gender-based discrimination.

Online gig work has become an emerging force in the job market for several key reasons:

  1. Technological Advancements: The rapid advancement of technology, especially the proliferation of smartphones and high-speed internet access, has made it easier for people to connect with potential employers or clients online. This has created a vast digital marketplace for gig work opportunities.
  2. Flexibility: Online gig work offers unparalleled flexibility. Workers can choose when and where they work, allowing them to balance their job with other commitments like education, caregiving, or pursuing other interests. This flexibility is particularly appealing to those who value work-life balance.
  3. Diverse Opportunities: Gig work spans a wide range of industries and skill sets. From driving for rideshare companies to freelance writing, graphic design, programming, and even virtual assistance, there are gig opportunities for people with diverse skills and backgrounds.

  6. Income Supplement: Gig work can serve as a primary source of income or a supplement to a full-time job. It provides opportunities for individuals to earn extra money when needed or transition into full-time freelancing if they desire.
  7. Entrepreneurship Opportunities: Online gig work often fosters an entrepreneurial spirit. Workers have the chance to market their skills, build their own brand, and even develop their own businesses over time.
  8. Job Market Evolution: The job market has been evolving towards a gig economy due to the changing nature of work. Many companies are increasingly relying on freelancers and contract workers to meet their staffing needs. This shift has further legitimized gig work as a viable career path.
  9. Pandemic Resilience: The COVID-19 pandemic accelerated the adoption of remote work and online gig platforms as traditional job opportunities dwindled. Many individuals turned to gig work to make ends meet during the economic uncertainty brought about by the pandemic.
