Cartoon on inequality - perfect for explaining analysis and evaluation!
17th November 2011
This cartoon is something that your students are sure to have an opinion on and can be used to clearly explain the difference between analysis and providing evaluative comment.
The analysis comes under the heading about why the cartoon is often true and the evaluation comes from considering whether it is always true. One way to approach this is to get your students to make some comments under each of the headings. Once you have gone through their answers you can explain that they have showed the key skills of analysis and evaluation!
As a (related) aside - I recently watched a DVD called “Gifted Hands - The Ben Carson Story” which is a fantastic story of an African-American who grew up in dire poverty and was bottom of his class. His mother challenged him to turn of the television and read two books a week. The result was that at 33 he was the head of Paediatric Neurosurgery at John Hopkins Hospital - inspirational stuff!
