Brexit - Could the UK join TPP?

Graham Watson

3rd January 2018

One of the oddest Brexit stories of 2018: will the UK seek to join the Trans-Pacific Partnership? It seems to me to be strange that we're admitting the economic benefits of a regional economic grouping but have withdrawn from the one that currently accounts for nearly 60% of our trade and are in favour of one that accounts for around 8%. Does this seem irrational - to me it does, given that transport costs can offset some of the potential gains from trade.
