A Level Economics Strong Foundations Workshops - Session Content for 2016/17

We're delighted to confirm the session content for our upcoming A Level Economics Strong Foundations workshops later this term.

The dates for these workshops are:

  • 22nd November: Portsmouth (Vue Cinema Gunwharf Quays)
  • 23rd November: London (Vue Cinema - Fulham Broadway)
  • 24th November: London (Vue Cinema - Westfield Stratford)
  • 25th November: Cambridge (The Light Cinema, Cambridge)
  • 28th November: Bristol (Vue Cinema - Bristol Cribbs Causeway)
  • 29th November: Birmingham (Vue Cinema - Star City Birmingham)
  • 30th November: Manchester (Vue Cinema - Manchester Lowry Salford Quays)
  • 1st December : Leeds (Vue Cinema - The Light Leeds)
  • 2nd December : Gateshead (Odeon Cinema - Gateshead)

The Strong Foundations workshop format is designed to:

  • Reinforce core A Level Economics teaching content that has been taught so far, including key foundation topics from Year 1
  • Enable students to catch-up with, and re-cap key topics from Year 1 (AS) that will may be examined in the terminal exams but which will not be taught again
  • Build student understanding of, and confidence in the core assessment skills that they need to master in order to perform strongly in the three terminal papers.
  • Help students prepare effectively, and provide a focus for mock exams in early 2017

Session Content Programme

Session 1: Starter for 10! - Multi-Choice questioning and numerical testing in Economics at A Level

  • Find out how A Level multi-choice questions are harder than you think and learn some strategies for tackling them!
  • Use your year 1 knowledge and application skills on multi-choice questions
  • What types of numerical questions might be asked at A Level?

Session 2: How to read like an economist – understanding the case study

  • Know the skills needed to spot the clues given by the examiner in a case study
  • See the common mistakes students make when reading data from tables and charts
  • Why specialist terminology really, really matters

Session 3: Thinking synoptically - combining your micro and macro knowledge

  • Crack the combination – how topics can be combined
  • Know which micro and macro topics are more likely to be combined in the synoptic assessment.
  • Spot the economics within the presented news stories

Session 4: Analyse This! Hone your analysis skills

  • Go beyond just advantages and disadvantages
  • What do the Famous Five Economists think?
  • Revision speed dating - play the Economic Relationship game

Session 5: The full picture - Evaluation skills for those big answers!

  • Understand the difference between analysis and evaluation
  • Construct the perfect paragraph in your extended answers
  • Winning techniques and exam hints/tips to score high marks
