Reliability of research

Reliability refers to the ability to repeat a piece of research again and obtain the same or similar results. Methods such as the Crime Survey or England and Wales will be seen as reliable methods as they use the same or similar questions each year to measure the types of crime that people have been victim of in the previous 12 months. Police recorded statistics will also be relatively reliable, but changes to the recording procedures of crime, could make this less reliable. This is because if something was an offence ten years ago, it may not be recorded in the same way by police ten years later.
