An amnesty is a form of official pardon given to individuals for crimes that may have been committed in exchange for co-operation with the authorities. This could be through informing on other criminals or could be more widespread - such as gun and knife amnesties - where individuals have voluntarily handed over illegal weapons as part of an initiative to reduce the amount of violent crime in an area.
