If you are looking for a good example of economies of scale and a global oligopoly then pharmaceuticals fits the bill. Here is a snazzy infographic showing global prescription sales and research and development spending.

During 2016, world market leader Pfizer's prescription sales were approximately 45.9 billion US dollars, while R&D spending was approximately 7.8 billion dollars.
