Women make better shoppers
15th May 2014
It's official - women are better at shopping than men. I have just finished listening to a brilliant edition of Peter Day's 'In Business' called Price Conscious, and one of the revelations was that men can be fooled into thinking they are getting a bargain simply by using red price stickers, whereas women are much more analytical about pricing and can look beyond the colour used on a label. Far be it from me to comment on this any further.....
However, this is a brilliant programme about pricing - if it's too late to use it for this year's students, please download it now and keep it on hand to use next year. It covers everything from market stalls and Poundland to Gucci, via the complexities of budget airline pricing, premium ice creams and - of course - supermarket price wars. Contributors include the founder of Poundland, the man who brought us the original Magnum at Unilever and went on to manage Gucci, and two marketing professors. There is even an accompanying article about Steve Smith, Poundland's founder, and how he got his inspiration. To borrow a phrase from Graham Prior, it is Business Studies gold dust, and it shouldn't be missed.
