Willy Wonka, leadership, and motivation.
29th August 2013
The original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory is an excellent source of Business Studies material, not least of which is the greatest marketing campaign the world has ever seen. But this short youtube clip focuses on a number of HR issues in the nut factory of Veruca Salt's father and I have used it to tease out a bit of evaluation from my students.
The concepts covered include
- production vs productivity
- leadership styles
- financial rewards and motivation
The last one in particular is worth a discussion - there does seem to some increase in motivation when the financial reward is offered. Is it likely to be a short or long-term? How much will the workers connect extra effort with the chance to earn more? Does it depend on the type of job they are doing? And what happens after the reward has been claimed?
As a bonus there is some atrociously bad parenting which I can refer back to if any student gets too demanding!
