IB students should always be on the lookout for suitable articles to complete their internal assessment. This alcohol related piece from the BBC website is ideal.

Scottish whisky exports have increased 22% (a boost to Scottish AD) in the first half of this year, mainly boosted by surging demand from emerging markets. The USA remains the top export market with shipments valued at £268m. Exports though to Central and South American increased 49% since the same period last year, shipments to Asia by 33%. Exports to Brazil (one of the BRIC economies) rose by 56%.

The whisky industry is rightly proud of its performance- “we are making a strong contribution to the Scottish government’s ambition of growing the country’s exports by 50% by 2017”. The free trade agreement with South Korea and better legal protection for Scotch whisky in India and Turkey has also given optimism for further growth.

This type of article can easily be used to develop a 750 word piece of analysis and could be submitted as a macro or international piece in your portfolio.
