This is a great business start-up story to use with students and will be just one of many, many real start-up stories that we use in our forthcoming BUSS1 exam coaching workshops.Velo Culture was launched this year by keen cyclist Bev Blakeman after being made redundant from her job running a cycling cafe in Newcastle. Bev has turned her passion for cycling and her talent for making jewellery and accessories into a cottage industry. What makes the idea unique is that Bev makes all of her jewellery and accessories from recycled bicycle parts. What an example for using when teaching adding value and creating a unique selling point! Bev also keeps her costs low by marketing via her own Velo Culture Facebook page as well as selling her products on existing websites such as folksy.com and etsy.com.Products range from brooches made from bicycle brake cables through to cuff links from recycled bicycle chain.I think this is a wonderful example to use with students and we will be looking at this start-up success story in a bit more detail as part of the exam coaching workshops.
