Ukraine 1 England 0 - A match to remember?

Jim Riley

12th October 2009

Whilst it might not have been the result we wanted, England’s match against the Ukraine on Saturday may become memorable for business reasons.

Whatever your view on whether England football matches should only be available to watch live on the internet, there is little doubt that there is plenty of scope for the topic to be used constructively in the business studies classroom.

Topics could include…

Price Discrimination
- with prices being cheaper in advance (£4.99) and increasing as kick-off time approaches (£11.99) this is a great example of price discrimination in action.

The role of the customer
- is this what people want? Do consumers/customers have a choice?

The impact of new technology
- how broadcasters are having to respond to changes in technology.

Effective marketing
- the businesses behind this venture managed to get a lot of media attention, but was it effective?

Is it viable financially?
- the businesses involved are claiming the venture was a technological success, but with only an estimated 300,000 subscribers was it a financial success?

Lots to debate, without even mentioning Rob Green’s red card!
