The Rise of Twitter

Jim Riley

2nd September 2009

As an avid Twitter user I was pleased to read of the continued rise of the site this morning.

It has now overtaken MySpace in a league table of Britain’s most popular websites. On in every 400 UK internet visits last week was to the site, according to the internet research company Hitwise. Twitter is now Britain’s 27th most popular website. Twitter may be in fact even more popular than the research suggests as many users have access to the site through their smart phones and third party applications rather than the site’s home page.

The site has seen its usage grow at more than 1600% over the last year, while MySpace has only achieved growth of 5%. Twitter now has more than 2.6m users, myself included. Facebook remains Britain’s most poplar site accounting for 47.5% of visits to social networking sites followed by YouTube with 16.6%.
