9th August 2013
The Focus Circle is a new teaching and learning resource that can be used as a bell work activity (an activity that is on the board as students enter the room), a starter or plenary for topics that have recently been covered or as a way of introducing new information that has not previously been covered.
The idea behind the Focus Circle is simple. Students are shown the Focus Circle which has up to 4 topic areas (categories) inside. Around the focus circle are up to 18 words/ phrases which belong to the different categories. Students select 1 of the topic areas and decide which of the key words/ phrases belong inside the focus circle (words that are specifically related to that topic area).
The focus circle has multiple applications and can be used as a bell work activity, a starter, a plenary or as a method of introducing new information about a topic or concept. The focus circle is highly interactive and can also be
In Business Studies, the Focus Circle would be ideal for teaching topics such as:
- Motivation: Maslow, Herzberg and Taylor
- Organisational Structures: Sole Trader, Partnership, LTD
- On the Job v Off the Job Training
- Quality Control v Quality Assurance
- Balance Sheets and Profit and Loss Account
For example, the Focus Circle might show the above 3 motivational theorists. Surrounding the Focus Circle are 18 key words/ phrases relating to the theorists. Some words may relate to more than one theorist. A student (or students) can come to the board, select a theorist and select which key word or phrase enters the circle. This makes the Focus Circle ideal for a plenary and/ or revision.
Alternatively, after a brief introduction into Quality Control and Quality Assurance students can be asked to decide which of the words and phrases belong in the Focus Circle. This also makes the Focus Circle ideal for introducing new information.
The Focus Circle is fully editable, can be used for virtually every business topic and comes
complete with full instructions on how to edit the activity as well as suggested teaching and learning strategies.
