The death of the DVD

The Economist is profiling the product life cycle of the DVD. Sales figures have been declining since 2006 but the fall has been much steeper recently.
There is probably still some life in the format. About one-third of the drop in DVD sales in the first quarter was counteracted by rising sales of high-definition Blu-ray discs, which are more profitable for the producers in the market. Much of the remainder can be put down to belt-tightening amid the downturn and growing piracy activity.
What extension strategies should we expect over the coming months and years to preserve the DVD?
