The Business Studies Treasure Hunt

Ian Pryer

4th October 2011

Who knows how long this Indian Summer weather may last. It’s wonderful, but it does lead to students asking ‘Can we go outside sir?’. In fairness the Freman College Business Suite isn’t fitted with air conditioning so on Friday I relented and we headed out to the sports field. But what did we get up to?

Well, this was a class of Year 10 students doing the Edexcel specification GCSE Business Studies. I created 15 riddles/puzzles which I scattered around the playing fields and outside space before hand in ‘Treasure Hunt’ style. They had to work in pairs to find the clues and solve them.

I’m not sure this activity necessarily needs great weather - it could just as easily be done inside around the walls of the classroom.

Attached are my clues, which relate to Spotting a Business Opportunity, and Showing Enterprise up to the point we’ve reached so far. Beware - some of them make reference to specific activities we’ve done together. I had them build a giraffe out of newspaper in groups to see who was best at finding out particular customer needs (I’m very fussy about how I like my newspaper giraffes but didn’t necessarily tell them all they needed to know). We also watched a video clip on You Tube by Duncan Goose of OneWater as an example of a social enterprise, hence the wording of that particular clue. I’m sure folks can amend them to suit their own classess and previous learning activities.

Grab your shades and give it a go!
