That’s Magic! A great way to teach ‘Adding Value’

This teaching and learning strategy is a real, real belter for teaching adding value. I showed it at the very first TBBLE event - way back when.

I love magic and bought myself a magic set from Argos, by Marvin. Inside it had this little book that you could change the pages from blank, to black and white pictures and then to coloured pictures and back again. Amazing!!

Anyway, I thought this would be brilliant as an introduction into adding value.

So, I brought the book into class and showed the students the blank pages. I asked them, how could I transform this book to make it worth more. One of the students said 'put pictures in it'. I performed the trick and made pictures appear! I then said, what could I now do to transform this book to make it worth more. One student said, 'put coloure pictures in'. Again, I made it happen!!!!

The students never, ever forget this learning experience and I used it as a hook to develop further understanding of adding value.

Jim is a big, big fan of the 'magic book of adding value' and Mark Mitchell from Greenhead College (another regular member of the TBBLE team) purchased one from Amazon. They are really cheap and available here :)

Dont tell the students how its done though!!
