Takeover Strategy: Can Wimpy Move Upmarket with GBK Takeover?
4th September 2016
Upmarket burger chain GBK (Gourmet Burger Kitchen) is now to be owned by the same business as Wimpy following a £120m takeover.
GBK has been sold by venture capitalists Capricorn Ventures, who also own Nando's.
For Famous Brands, the current owners of Wimpy, the GBK takeover provides an opportunity to increase the size of its UK-located restaurant portfolio.
Are there many synergies between Wimpy and GBK? It's hard to see too many significant ones; perhaps it will provide some greater bargaining power with certain suppliers.
