Success with AQA Unit 3 - Market Analysis

Jim Riley

3rd June 2009

Michelle and I are putting the final touches to some new teaching resources for the AQA A2 Business Unit 3 INSET days in London and Manchester next week. One of the areas of focus will be Marketing analysis where the BUSS3 specification poses some new teaching challenges…

Students taking BUSS3 will need to develop some strong analytical skills when looking at markets and marketing. They will need to become comforable handling data, assessing evidence for devising marketing strategies and taking marketing decisions. Averages, trends, correlation will all come into play.

Our challenge is to come up with some suggestions for markets and resources which can provide suitable practice for teachers and students alike.

On the INSET day we’ll be looking at the television industry. Its a terrific market to use as a case study: there is some super data available, it is accessible to students (just think about howlong they spend interacting with the product each week!) and there are plenty of factors that are driving change & marketing decisions.

The main focus of the marketing analysis session will be looking at:

- How the UK television market segments
- How IT is used by the industry and its regulator to monitor market activity
- The main marketing objectives of BSkyB
- Some marketing strategies being adopted by the main media operators

Delegates will also get the chance to win prizes in our “Sales Forecasting” competition; we’ll give them some stimulus material on BSkyB and ask them to “Beat the Analysts”.

There are still a few places left on the course if you are able to join us in London (8 June) and Manchester (10 June). Call the office (0844 8000085) to grab one of the last few places
