Starter Activity - Culture - BUSS4 Research Theme
31st January 2013
The new research them is upon us and what a cracker it is, culture. This is a nice little starter activity that I used with all my A2 groups when introducing the concept of culture.Im a big, big believer in introducing topics to students in ways that they can actually relate to. This allows them to gain a deeper understanding of the business concepts that follow. After a brief introduction, outlining what culture actually means, I put the students into small groups and got them to think about the features of the school culture between years 7 and 11 and then compare and contrast this with the features of the culture in year 12 and 13.I then got them to think about how the culture affected issues such as student behaviour, performance and attendance. This led to a fabulous discussion. Several students said that they thrived on what they perceived as increased responsibility in 6th form, such as relaxed uniform and only needing to be in school for the lessons they had. Other students said they found it hard to be focused and stay disciplined as the freedom was too much for them to handle. They took advantage of the more relaxed culture. We then bolted on the business concepts to give them a deeper understanding.A nice litle activity which students can really relate to.
