What's the Story?
Sony has unveiled the Access Controller, a brand-new PlayStation 5 controller made especially for players with disabilities. Players can customise the controller to fit their own physical needs, for example, by choosing from different buttons, triggers, and sticks to create a setup that meets their individual needs.
This is the first accessory of its kind made specifically by Sony for the PS5. Microsoft already has the Adaptive Controller for Xbox and PC on the market. The Access Controller was designed with input from accessibility experts at AbleGamers. The goal was to address three main issues disabled gamers face; using the thumbsticks, pressing buttons, and holding the controller.
There is feedback from initial users that more work could be done, such as adding a right thumbstick, however, the controller is seen as a positive step towards inclusivity and accessibility for disabled gamers.
On the software side of gaming, other adjustments aiming for greater accessibility include racing game Forza Horizon 5 adding sign language, The Last of Us Part II having a mode for blind and deaf players, and Just Dance featuring wheelchair accessible routines. But accessible hardware options have been limited.
The Access Controller aims to address this need and allow disabled gamers to participate equally in gaming culture
