Sing Along Revision - The Break Even Song

Ian Pryer

4th December 2011

I was recently looking for some resources on You Tube to help me introduce my Year 10s to the concept of break even. However, all my initial searches returned were clips featuring the song Break Even by The Script. This gave me a bit of an idea…..

I penned an alternative introductory verse and a chorus to the afore mentioned song, and then made a list of aspects of break even that further verses might cover. These included the formula for break even, the concept of contribution, margin of safety, advantages and disadvantages of break even as a tool.

Once we’d covered break even in class across a couple of lessons it was time to get them song-writing!

Having shown my students the original song, in case they weren’t familiar with it, I then gave each of them a topic upon which to write a verse in small groups or pairs. They were supported by a fact sheet on their topic. One of my students collated the verses in to a full song as they were produced and we ended the lesson with a karaoke sing-along with the new lyrics up on my whiteboard.

You can either use this collated version of the best verses including some alternatives, or better still let your students write their own. That’s where the real fun lies!

There is talk of a single and video being recorded by my students….watch this space!
