Self Scanning at the Supermarket

Tesco Northampton announced in October 2009 that its Northampton Express Store was to be the first “no-cashiers” store in the country. The move was hailed not as a cost saving plan but as a way of improving customer service at its store. Staff numbers have not been reduced and for customers who did not want to scan their own shopping, a member of staff would do it for them.

Self Scanning technology could revolutionise shopping. Tesco has undertaken large investment in this technology as part of its growth strategy in the USA and suggestions are that it will be rolled out further in the UK.

However a poll by consumer website myvouchercodes.co.uk says self-service tills annoyed consumers most about the contemporary supermarket shopping experience. The Greengrocer website features an article today on this topic. Read the article here
