Ryanair Turbulence
17th August 2009
Corporate culture is and has played an important role in the success of Ryanair over the years. Whilst the media reports profits quickly turning to losses for many players in the airline sector, Ryanair is bucking the trend and still reporting profits. Corporate culture is defined as a blend of the values, beliefs, taboos, symbols, rituals and myths all companies develop over time.
Michael O’Leary, Ryanair’s ceo has introduced an atypical corporate culture through his brash leadership style and his fearless approach to entering new territory. This article which featured in the Yorkshire Post profiles how the culture of the organisation is influencing the business strategy. Ryanair is willing to exert constant pressure on the airport authorities to reduce fees in order that they can reduce prices to consumers. This has resulted in announcements over the last 2 weeks from Ryanair that they are reducing or removing all planes from Manchester, Stansted and Dublin airports and relocating to Leeds-Bradford airport. The no-frills airline is run by a no-frills man. This basic approach runs throughout the business operations and is reflective of a new business model!
