Robert Peston’s BBC Business Blog led today with this interesting article on the spending by Premier League Clubs, especially on player wages. He reveals the most successful club measured upon league position in relation to spend on player wages for 2009/10….but who is it?

Well the answer is the mighty old gold of Wolverhampton Wanderers, which will make my wife and father-in-law proud as supporters of the Wolves. This article could really get students thinking about the different ways in which businesses might measure success, especially football clubs. With new regulations set to come in governing the extent to which clubs operate within their financial means, it could also kick off some discussions about external influences upon the football industry. Will clubs curtail their spending, or simply pass the costs on to long suffering supporters?

I have joined the increasing number of colleagues using Twitter to follow business news and share ideas, and recommend following BBC Business if you don’t already - that’s how I picked up this article.
