Resigning from your job? It’s a piece of cake

I remember the first time I had to resign from a job. I was really nervous. But here's a great way of resigning and plugging the business that you intend to leave in order to run as well. It's also packed full of great content for Unit 1 Edexcel GCSE Business and AQA AS Business BUSS1.

Chris Holmes, who worked at Stansted Airport as a Border Agency official, resigned to devote more time to his business and passion - cake making - and to be able to spend more time with his family. So he chose to write his resignation letter on a cake.

For AS and GCSE Business students this perfectly encapsulates a couple of reasons why someone may choose to start their own business. It's also a great example of clever, low cost marketing, because the story and this image have gone viral since it took place on Monday. I'm sure he will have picked up an order or two as a result!

And it gave me a great idea for a homework, class activity or plenary - write your own resignation letter explaining why you are leaving your job to start up your own business.

Mr Cake is based not far from where I teach, so I'm now wondering if he might be a target for a guest speaker in years to come.
