Reflections on the Bangladesh factory disaster
6th May 2013
You may not want to dwell on this topic, which is so terrible that I am sure your first reaction to what has happened will have been highly emotionally charged. The scale of the tragedy only seems to grow, with the situation perhaps made worse by the realisation that these events are very typical of working conditions in many countries.I've been putting together some links to encourage a bit of reflection on what, if anything, we can learn.
The links are posted here, with one or two prompts to organise your thoughts:
- Why has the disaster happened? What went wrong?
- Who is responsible? Is it the factory owners, greed, poverty - or our own shopping habits?
- What might be the best way to react, as consumers, citizens and concerned onlookers?
- How will the garment industry respond, both here and abroad?
- How have similar tragedies in the past - both in the rich and poor world - influenced how we live and work now?
