Maslows Sunday Roast

10th October 2012

It all started with a tweet by my good friend Brian Tuck.

A couple of Sunday's ago he tweeted

'I love making Sunday Roast Dinner for the family. It seems to satisfy some basic need in my psyche'.

This got me thinking immediately about Maslows hierarchy of needs and why Brian loves to make Sunday Roast for his family. I think this would make a great activity for students. Linking something they are all familiar with to a motivational theorist. Anyway, on with the blog.

Firstly, making the roast probably meets Brians basic needs, the need to eat. However, I think that it goes far deeper than that. Making the roast will also meet his security needs, the fact that he is providing for his family. In addition to this, Sunday Roasts are a very social activity. As we can see, we are moving up the hierarchy as the activity has now met his social needs.

Next, it makes him feel good about himself therefore meeting his esteem needs.

Finally, self actualisation. Has he achieved this by making the Sunday Roast?

I will let you decide on that one.............
