What's the story?

A Coventry-based aluminium foundry has secured a £6m grant to advance sustainable manufacturing practices in the automotive industry. The company plans to collaborate with luxury car manufacturer Aston Martin on an innovative research program aimed at developing lighter vehicle components.

The initiative focuses on incorporating fully recycled aluminium in vehicle production, with the dual goals of enhancing sustainability and reducing costs without compromising performance.

The research will employ artificial intelligence to design new chassis components for an existing Aston Martin model, potentially streamlining the development process and cutting associated expenses.

This project, supported by a not-for-profit organisation and a government agency, also aims to reduce reliance on newly mined aluminium. The foundry intends to use the grant to expand its workforce, upgrade equipment, and improve its recycling capabilities.

A spokesperson for the company expressed optimism that this research could serve as a model for other industries seeking to boost manufacturing efficiency while prioritising sustainability.
