Lunchtime Learning with the Calculation Practice Book!
2nd February 2018
Our AQA and Edexcel Calculation Practice Books were launched last November, and I think it is safe to say that they have been very well received by both teachers and students, so much so, that some students at Hills Road Sixth Form College, are giving up their lunchtime on a Monday to work through it!
Ian Pryer, Head of Department at Hills Road College, identified a group of 10 students who needed more support on calculations, via the tutor2u A Level Business Initial Numeracy Assessment, data on their GCSE Maths results, and evidence from previous assessments.
These 10 committed students watch a tutor2u topic video over the weekend, and then on a Monday lunchtime, work through sections of the calculation practice book, with Ian on hand to answer any queries. Ian then emails students the answers (which come, fully worked, with the calculation practice book) so that they can check their own progress.
Ian has said that the sessions are going down so well, that they have had additional students choosing to attend the session on a Monday lunchtime of their own volition! Who would have thought calculations could be so much fun.
I'm sure other centres (over 500 are using the booklets) are using them in all sorts of different ways and it would be great to hear how other teachers are utilising this resource.
