Love it or hate it, Marmite is helping save the planet

Earlier this year, Marmite made the headlines for being made illegal in Denmark.

However, I’m guessing that very few people have heard the latest news from Unilever, the global conglomerate with a diverse product range including Domestos, Brylcreem and Slim-Fast as well as Marmite.

Unilever has announced that the waste generated in producing Marmite will be used to power the factory where it is made. The residue generated in producing Marmite (18,0000 tonnes per year) has to be removed to stop the machines clogging and ensure production meets hygiene regulations. Rather than disposing of this waste, it is put into a digester where bugs eat it and give off methane, which is burnt to power the factory. A great example of Corporate Social Responsibility and a business acting on rather than merely talking sustainability.

So maybe one day we will be able to harness the methane generated by cows for all of our benefit…
