Legal Environment: Starbucks Customer Claim Gets An Icy Reception
25th August 2016
A great example here of the legal environment facing multinationals like Starbucks.
The Guardian reports here on several lawsuits that have been filed against Starbucks in the US.
One claim, now rejected by the courts, is that Starbucks is short-changing customers by providing ice as part of its iced-beverage range.
Another claim, not yet determined, alleges that Starbucks' latte customers are being duped by the amount of froth added to the top of the cup.
Of course litigation is a common feature of doing business, particularly for large businesses with seemingly deep pockets who operate in the service business.
Starbucks will have a large in-house legal team who deal with these and the numerous other other aspects of running a global business.
Much litigation will be spurious in nature. I've always assumed (and perhaps hoped) that an ice beverage might be cooled with ice. Suing Starbucks would be the last thing on my mind as I take that first sip...
