Leadership - it’s not a popularity contest

Jim Riley

29th January 2012

I like this five minute interview with Allan Leighton in which he chats about what makes an effective business leader.

According to Leighton, effective business leaders are very different characters, but they do a lot of the same things:

- They are focused
- Good communicators
- Don’t look for popularity
- Have an eye for detail
- Are prepared to do things differently and do the difficult things

Leadership in a nutshell from Leighton:

Leaders should do things because they are the right thing to do, not because it will make them popular. Leadership is about getting everyone in the business to do the common-sense, day-to-day things. Get that right and, in the long-term, the business will succeed.

Do you agree?
