Innovation - Is Entertainment Letting Us Down?

2nd January 2010

An interesting article in the Guardian might provide an alternative lesson starter on the topic of innovation.

The Entertainment Retailers Association is calling for greater product innovation in 2010 - arguing that the entertainment market has become too reliant on sequels and spin-offs from existing, popular entertainment products. As X-Factor, BGT and Harry Potter-related products continue to dominate consumer spending on media, students could argue that this is simply the result of effective product life cycle extension strategies by the likes of Simon Cowell and JP Rowling? Another line of discussion might focus on what is meant by innovation in entertainment - is it through different types and styles of content, or it is through the innovative use of new distribution channels such as mobile phones and online?
