Has Your Team Got the Business? Team Challenge (Week 1)

Michelle Stephenson

3rd September 2009

This week sees me heading back to the whiteboard; teaching AS and A2 Business Students at Sir john Deanes in Northwich. Each week I intend to set the students a weekly team challenge. An opportunity to test prior learning, develop their knowledge and understanding of the AQA Business course and hopefully engage the students with some entertaining and challenging lesson activities. I will share the resources and activities on the tutor2u blog and if you feel the need to contribute your own team challenge activities, please do!

Week 1 will kick off with the X Factor Challenge. It combines a PowerPoint quiz, based on basic A2 terms and business news, with a physical challenge, (I was inspired by the TV game show “The Cube”)

As this is the introductory week for the students, my aim is to not only touch upon some elements of the A2 syllabus but also to work as an icebreaker as the some members of the group have not met before.

Ingredients!

- Computer that is able to run PowerPoint
- Projector
- Enthusiastic and keen students, (pens and paper at the ready).
- Has Your Team Got the Business? PowerPoint Challenge 1
- 5 hard peas and a plastic, empty bottle

The activity has been structured and designed on PowerPoint and can be adapted to suit any course or subject.

In Brief:
The first challenge is a 10 question quiz in the form of a conveyor belt. Students have 2 minutes to write down the answers to the questions flying across the screen. The answers are given by the teacher, students mark their answers and their scores are recorded on the “Scores on the Doors” slide.
Using the Generator X, (a random generator PPT slide) one team will be given the opportunity to Risk it or Stick it. The team could opt to take the Risk Factor challenge, if successful, double their points, if they fail, a total score wipe-out! Or will they prefer to play it safe and stick it by not taking the challenge.

Instructions
When opening the PowerPoint, go to “notes view”, this will give instructions on running the activity and the answers to the quiz questions, with links to the relevent articles.

Hope you and your students enjoy it!
